I was very nervous going into this game. It had all the hallmarks of being a "trap game" and although we had plenty of the ball in the first half we didn't really do anything with it. We started the second half with more intent and caused them some problems in a 5 to 10 minute period but then the game drifted by until that first goal. I didn't like that we fell back into deeper positions after that and was relieved when we got our second. Also relieved when Kelleher saved that penalty. He's proving me wrong and I'm delighted that he's doing so.

Not a perfect display by us but at this stage I'll just settle for wins and getting to that 40 point target as quickly as possible. Job done.

Yes agreed, it felt very Bramall Lane 2023 to me.

A good team victory with no real stand out player as Man of the Match; although, push comes to shove I think Janelt would perhaps be the man.

Credit to Wolves fans who turned up in numbers and backed their side (I did not notice any booing by them) despite their woeful position and points tally.

Good, happy journey home and when filling the tank at Bagshot saw another Bees fan on his way home from the game - Bees everywhere now it seems!

Should have filled up in Brum, petrol was 1.29 there last week as opposed to 1.47 round here. Thieves.

While I’d love us to get into Europe I fear it could be one of the biggest threats to our Premier League status. All those Thursday - Sundays.

yes ,look at Palace , we'd need another first team of reserves
But is there a record of fairly established PL teams getting themselves relegated due to under-estimating European football? Are Palace down with the dead men because they have to fit in some extra games? No, they are 8th, with nearly enough points to have survived last season already. and also in a league cup quarter final. How many players did they sign for Europe?

There was a fair bit of discussion of this at the end of last season but it seems the same worries crop up here. We can prepare. We'd have a whole summer to sign a few extra bodies (not a whole team) and consider who can handle what workload. Some of the games are easier than the PL... A bit of a workout for a few of the better B team players too who do actually play some European trips already.

I don't mind this being a consolidation season either, given all the changes, but what bothers me is fans of some other clubs - you know the ones - would say things like "teams like Brentford don't belong in European competition". This type of talk suggests a lot of Brentford fans more or less agree with them and would rather the team stuck to finishing 12th-14th every season, for fear that a good thing could possibly lead to a bad thing, later on.

no its the same number of points as the team that finishes 3rd bottom
And with our goals against record this season being so good that amount would surely keep us up

I completely acknowledge your post.

And yes, I have had it easier than most that are on here, My dad, who has been going to Brentford since the late 70s, regularly used to tell me (and still does from time to time) about how utterly dross we used to be, and how lucky I am to be watching Brentford at this time.
'All the sh*t I had to watch growing up' he says to me, and I am very much au fait about our history and many playoff defeats.

Afterall, I have been to the Yeovil 2-1 PO final loss, also games such as Rovers at home in 2013 (that dreaded day) and my first ever game was a 2-0 loss away to Yeovil on a freezing January day in 2011. Even the JP Trophy loss to Carlisle (what a boring game that was to watch)

Again, nowhere near the level of what most on here have witnessed, experienced and felt, but still, I would say, enough so that I understand where the club has come from. I myself sometimes can't believe where we are. Being a distinguished regular within the best league in the world.

However, just because we are where we are, doesn't mean us, as supporters, aren't allowed to point out issues, modifications needed and concerns that need be addressed within the team. Its all in the principle of wanting to do better. Its this principle of wanting to constantly do better, through addressing issues which has allowed to the club to advance to where it is today (and where it could be tomorrow)

I understand that many are happy just be to in the Premier League, and in many ways, winning games is just a bonus, so why complain about it - right?

Its a long argument to be had, with many contrasting and valid points on either side, but my underlying statement is this:
Lets not winge, but merely point out issues within the team when we feel like it. Not in a manor of being spoilt but more so in the principles of wanting the club to do better (as I'm sure they will).

Totally agree, we have to look up but it’s how we express it.
Mathew B is not accepting premier survival. He wants more

Question ? What's the minimum number of points we need to avoid relegation.
Wolves will struggle to get into double figures and I can't see Burnley getting to 30. The other relegation place is more debatable. Probably West Ham but wouldn't be surprised if they got to 35, so more work to do to be safe.

Wolves 0 Brentford 2 (Lewis-Potter 2)

Its the way in which we won.

I know how it sounds (honestly, I really do 😞), but I just can't sit back with thinking 'this is totally fine'. its not.

Technically yes, we did enough to win and I'm happy we did (obviously). However not having single shot until that KLP effort near the end of the first half - against this dross Wolves team isn't exactly something to cheer about (is it).

I'm more concerned about our recent trend in the games since Brighton away. We've supplied very little threat to opposition goals since then and of course, since then, we've beaten Burnley 3-1 and won away today.

But I'm sorry to say this - these wins were expected, however even so:
- Burnley: we only showed up in the last 10 mins, at home, to a relegation bound team.
- Wolves: We barely showed up at all until the second half, whereby both of our goals came as a consequences of Wolves complete and utter incompetence to deafened (I wouldn't completely say it was due to how well we attacked).

Last season, yes we were roughly in the same position as we are now - but when we won games last year, we won with conviction and showed a confident attacking display - playing quick, direct and very often, effective football.

I haven't seen that this season. Not say say that were in trouble of being relegated or suggesting anything such as this. I think you would have to be unhinged to feel that way.

There are just issues in our style of play which absolutely need addressing.

Merry Christmas anyway...
Well said

I think we may be blessed in that our two worst seasons in terms of football style on the pitch in the PL coincide with two of the worst sets of rival teams for many seasons
A couple of seasons ago when we had all the injuries we had Burnley Leicester and Saints being truly awful

This seaon (again not playing very vibrant football) we have Wolves and Burnley unlikely to even get 30 points.

Theris no doubt that KA has done a great job in terms of the points he has accrued, but it is slightly alarming how rarely we show confident attacking displays.

Season 2013/14 Wolves won League 1. Brentford as runners up (94 points ) joined them in the Championship. Looking at our respective positions now, it is a measure of just how well we have done. Wolves might be a big club, but like so many other big clubs have been shown up by the brilliance of MB.
It must be soul destroying to be a WW fan this season, especially after seemingly being
established in the PL for some years now.
They’ve always been an up or down club. Rarely much in between. For example I know that they are the only team to have won the Championship of all 4 Divisions. What I didn’t know, according to Molyneux Mix, is they’re the only team to suffer back to back relegations - twice! The fear on there is that they might end up achieving a third, to add to their other unwanted records.

lowest points total after 17 games in the history of all four divisions stretching back to 1889 apparently!

I think people tend to over-estimate the "this'll be a hard season to stay up" factor when it finally comes to it... some people will worry and say we need 40-44 points "just in case" but it'll be similar to normal maybe a few points more, 33-36.

If you're trying to put a figure on it worth keeping in mind that when one team is absolutely dreadful it raises the bar a bit for most other teams. If everyone has taken 4 or 6 points off Wolves when it comes to it that probably raises the usual level by a couple of points on its own.

The year when West Ham went down with 42 points (very unusual!) it was influential that the two teams below them were much worse (19 and 26 points) and even the top few teams had fewer points than usual.

Whilst there are obviously other teams I'd prefer to get relegated (Forest, Leeds, Fulham for example) can't say I won't take a decent amount of enjoyment if (when) they finally go this season.
Mainly due to how I remember them as yet another entitled fan base who looked down their noses at us when we were competing on a level playing field with them in the League One/Championship seasons around 2013 - 2018.
(Particularly on their Molineux Mix Forum)
W**kers!!!!
Good riddance!!!

I thought it had some good points. No one can deny we are very healthy looking on our points tally. But last season we used to be truly terrifying bursting forward and looked so dangerous. This season there is far less of that. I understand the reasons for it but it doesn't mean its not true.

But its all good. We must have sh*t loads of money in the bank and we will be safe AGAIN, and our players will continue to develop and so will KA.

Very balanced POV, I never understand people who lean to far onto each side.

Never all rosy, never all gloom. COYB!

This time last season we had earned 1 point away, and looked truly terrifying bursting forward against Southampton, Wolves, Leicester and Ipswich…

Other team that also "need to do more work to be safe" include: Arsenal, Manchester City, Liverpool, Manchester United, Aston Villa, Chelsea and 31 others.

Yep, more work to be done, 12 points, current run rate suggests we can all relax after Brighton home on 21st Feb.

If we can’t comfortably get more than 12 points from 21 games we completely deserve relegation.

We might lose every game up to and including that one. We'd be 17th in the table. I'd be worried.

Jee you’re almost being positive for a change. Three defeats on the bounce, confidence gets shaken and have to rebuild it. Today was a good start. Happy Christmas
Did we lose to Leeds? Or are you referring to away matches - if so, only3?
Merry Christmas & Happy New Year all

I suspect people don't read comments on matches after a few days have passed, but I think the Wolves game was really interesting, both in itself, and as an indication of the expectations for our club the fanbase now has. At the game I thought we looked committed, well organised, and by far the better team. Janelt was everywhere, centre backs were solid, and although Rico got some criticism (and he does seem to make a few more mistakes these day) I thought he was excellent for the vast majority of the match.
Of course, to demonstrate that after all these years of watching the game I still no nothing about football, I was slagging off KLP in the first half - it actually took the MOTD analysis for me to see what he had done during the game and realise both how well he took those two chances, but also how he was operating in a different way to find those spaces in and around the box.

On reflection, the story of the match seems to me to be that of a team that had lost a bit of energy and key attackers to AFCON and injury, that found a solution. A player whose been on the margins stepped into a new role designed for him by KA and won us the match. Didn't spot it at the time, but was this actually a Keith Andrews tactical masterclass?

I'm a bit in two minds about it ... While i completely understand why Doherty says it, and feels the need to go out saying it in such a public manner, I'm not entirely sure that going out saying it in such a public manner is actually all that helpful for them.

Well, if they get more than 2 points in their next 17 matches, he could argue that it was helpful.....
