I don't mind this if we have a clause to recall at any time!
If we have Kev, Dango, Antony all fighting for two spots he might not get a look in....but all it takes is one injury and I'd prefer he was on our bench and getting minutes.

No such clauses exist.

In this particular deal. Or are you talking in general?
In general. These are temporary transfers of either 6 months or a season, a player can't be recalled. Think there are slightly different rules for keepers if the owning club has issues filling the position.

Season long loan to Sheffield United
This is exactly what is needed - A platform to go and perform in the hamster wheel of The Championship. Saturday -> Tuesday -> Saturday -> Tuesday -> Saturday -> Tuesday and on for 46 matches.

Good luck to him.

I'm trying to find this in the rules but can't see it - I can see reference to recalling players though. AI seems to think you can too. What's the rule preventing him being recalled?

Romelle Donovan (Sheffield United)

Mike Mcgrath has reported it.

He's a 19 year old who clearly needs first team minutes. He has serious potential but he's the sort of player who would benefit most from playing competitive minutes than continuing his development in training. I thought he'd be in our first team picture this year but this is probably more beneficial for him.

Or is that we can recall a player, with a clause, but he'd then need to wait until the January transfer window to be added to the 25 man PL squad list?

He wouldn't be on the 25 man squad list but he couldn't play for us.

You can recall players but only during the transfer window. So say, for example, if we got injuries on the wing in November and wanted to recall him, we’d have to wait until January for him to be eligible to play.

We can't "recall" a player on a whim. Sheffield United would have the player registered to them under a temporary contract and it can only be withdrawn if both parties agree - often happens because of injury. I think with year long loans, there is sometimes a breakpoint in January, not sure about that. Regardless of whether he did return to Brentford early, he couldn't be re-registered as a Brentford player until the next window.

Romelle Donovan (Sheffield United)

To be fair I'd forgotten about Nunes. Wonder if he's fit now and considered higher in the pecking order (personally I thought Donovan looked really good in the little time he got).

Romelle Donovan (Sheffield United)

Great move.. hope he smashes it and comes back ready for the a first team place next year

Romelle Donovan (Sheffield United)

Good loan - exactly what's needed for him at this point. Loads of players have a good year at Championship level and can then make the step up to PL regular - no reason it can't be Romelle.

Romelle Donovan (Sheffield United)

Romelle is an exciting and talented player and from what we have seen so far he offers that old ‘tricky winger’ style of play who loves to beat the opponent by dribbling the ball past him instead of laying it off and looking for a return.

What we, the fans, haven’t yet seen is how he gets on up against established, experienced defenders on a regular basis so the loan would be ideal to give him that experience rather than him trying to continue to learn his skills against players in our squad who are familiar with his technique and him not getting enough match time in the PL because of the quality of players we currently have.

It’s a catch-22 situation, try to keep him involved in the PL squad and use him only on occasion or allow him to do what he is good at and what he enjoys most; playing regularly in games that matter.

The club appear to have come to the conclusion that it is the latter.

Romelle Donovan (Sheffield United)

He was in front of Nunes who had a crap loan at Swansea .I assume Nunes wont get any where near the first team next season then
He wasn’t ahead, just on a different path with different requirements.

and a breakpoint in January on a season long loan would have to be agreed upon in the loan agreement ahead of time. the default isn't that we'd be able to take him back in January on a whim, merely that January would be the only theoretical opportunity to reintroduce him to the squad if the breakpoint were negotiated.

Probably the most important player loaned out was Sam Saunders to Wycombe. Having had Romelle under his charge at some point Sam I’m sure will know the benefits to playing minutes rather than fighting for bench time. Also having to fight to prove you warrant his place back is part and parcel of a pro footballers career and one Sam can testify to. One thing for sure we’ve all enjoyed seeing Romelle showing his potential and hope he can make it with us in the long term. He’s still young At the the very worst we make a profit on our investment and he gets a chance elsewhere. Lets trust KA and co make the right call.

I disagree. I think Dave to Portsmouth was the best loan we've done. Came back a new player

Romelle Donovan (Sheffield United)

???? but we kept Rom and he was making the bench , Nunes not even here
Nunes had been with us longer and we knew him better. He needed good match time after coming from a foreign league and injury.

Donovan came to us with major discipline/attitude issues which we’d dealt with enough during his loan to buy him but may have needed to keep him on a shorter leash for while giving him encouragement.

We trust him enough now to let him get match time in a team that’ll probably aim top 6 at least.

We’ll probably be looking to get nunes playing regularly in the PL.

Different paths at different stages.

Romelle Donovan (Sheffield United)

This is a perfect move. Sheffield United are likely to be competitive and if he can force his way into the starting lineup there then it will be fantastic experience and far better preparation for the premier league than he can get playing cups, PL2 and the odd appearance off the bench.

He's going to be a fair way down the pecking order here with Dango, Schade, Anthony, Carvalho and hopefully Josh all vying for the wide positions. Not to mention Nunes is back and he probably could do with at least six months with the first team after a less than stellar loan at Swansea.

Romelle Donovan (Sheffield United)

I think this is a good move for him. I hope I'm not wrong, but I can see him making a real impact in the Championship and get a lot of game time (which hasn't always been the case for our loaned out players).

Romelle Donovan (Sheffield United)

Whether it is a great move for him or not, I'm personally wishing I could see the reaction of the bloke in the pub after the the 1-0 there that was telling us how we didnt belong in the prem

Romelle Donovan (Sheffield United)

Shame. He’s been impressive here so far, I don’t see why he can’t play a role here next season

I suppose him going on loan is the reason he can’t, but ya know

He’s behind too many players at the moment. Regular Championship football with a club who’ll have ambitions of the top 6 will be excellent for his development.

A role made up predominantly or cameos won’t do him nearly as good as a full Championship season.

Romelle Donovan (Sheffield United)

I don't think he is ready to challenge for a premier league starting place and he is at the age where he really needs first team football to develop. A season long loan at what should be a good championship club is exactly what he needs and this time next year we will have a far better idea as to whether he will make the grade in the top tier. This is one of those Brentford win-win-win situations that we are so good at.
