Disagree. Whilst Mee, Pinnock, Zanka have done an incredible job this season defensively, they are all very limited in terms of quality on the ball and this holds us back. Ajer gives us that quality on the ball as well as his impressive pace for a centre half, both qualities we really lack. Imo he’s guaranteed a start at RCB in a back 3 when he’s fully fit
Better on the ball? Yes.
Better defender? I'm not convinced.

A bit harsh on Mee (Cruyff turn v Chelsea!) and Pinnock.
Mee’s cruyff turn to take the piss out of Chelsea was a obviously delight to watch but also fairly out of character. His passing is generally poor with a lot of balls misplaced or overhit. Obviously through no fault of his own though given that he’s spent most of his career playing hoofball under Dyche. Pinnock is slightly better but still nowhere near Ajer’s ability to bring it out of defence and carry it 20/30 yards

A fit Ajer gets in our first XI but we need to get him fit.

Is he still not fit? Zanka preferred to him for the 3rd CB role again.
I think he's fit to play, but why change a side that has been performing well?

I think he'll likely be first choice RCB in a three come the new season, I just hope his paper hamstring has been fixed with something a little more durable.

I see it that Zanka and Mee playing either side of Pinnock in the back three is the preferred option when we are expecting to defend very narrow and compact e.g against tougher opposition.

Ajer has fallen through the cracks a little bit, because since returning from injury whenever we’ve had a more winnable game we’ve just played 4-3-3, rather than a more attacking 3-at-the-back system that suits Ajer.

Two years into a four year contract. Big season coming up for him. It feels like we are transitioning to playing a back four in most games and he hasn't been trusted yet at centre half in that system. Seems unlikely he will get in at RB ahead of Hickey.

Can he stay fit is the first challenge. Can he prove himself to TF as capable in a 2?

He will get opportunity to play right centre back in a two with Pinnock in pre-season one would imagine. He has all attributes looking for in speed, height, ball playing ability . Plus will have Hickey on his outside. A case of coaches working with him over next few months.

Whatever the formation and style of play, he’s never really shown positional discipline, IMHO. I think there’s more work to do for him yet.
Yep, that's it for me. Put simply, his defending and positional play is not as good as those selected ahead of him. Yes, we know he can bring the ball out, but that's no good if he can't get his primary job right.

I'm sure he'll get his chance next season at some point, but the standard of defending in our team has gone up since he joined us last season. He needs to rise to that, or he'll be back on that bench.

Rumors from a friend in Frankfurt that they are looking at signing him.

As the great Peter Gelson said......"I played against a lot of players who were tall but not very good in the air. My problems came when I came up against someone who was tall and good in the air". I think Ajer is in the former category.

Kristoffer Ajer

Exactly. He's a good player. That was plain to see before his first real injury.
Really hoping they're taking the time with him to get back to full strength. A full pre-season will really help him get back to that level so he can continue to grow. If he can learn how to be good in the air as well, he'll be a top tier CB... He's our most athletic CB, except maybe for Ethan. I think a CB rotation would be good for next season, help the older guys stay healthier and fresher and help Ajer grow into his role.

I think there’s a decent player in there he just gets injured allot he’s had 3 injuries with us already, Kris has different attributes to Ethan and Ben where he can drive out of defence with his long legs and carry the ball forward just like his goal against Southampton last season.

Kristoffer Ajer

agree and he has been injured so often he hasnt had time to learn the Brentford way properly . He was a our record signing at the time . £13m ? We wouldnt take a punt and then give up on him
More like £3 million with Fosu part ot deal from Oxford United I think.

Kristoffer Ajer

I agree. He started our as a midfielder as a youth. Pep's use of John Stones is rhe blueprint here.
Think we will see teams tactics changing going forward with most teams playing only one up front and few of those the more robust number nine , hence will see more teams playing with a center back that steps into midfield and/ or one of the full backs hence overloading midfield area and forcing opposition wide attackers to go narrow and support midfield.

Is he in Norway squad for Scotland game??

He’s an interesting player, much faster than the average CB but much worse in the air than you’d expect for 6”6.

He’s really good at slide tacking and surprisingly decent at dribbling.

Genuinely don’t know where I’d play him, defensive mid could be the only option.

Im a big fan but he’s yet to take off here, keen to see how he gets on next season.

He was excellent at the start of last season ✅

He has definitely lost his way a little due to injury but that is how it should be ?

It seems a long time ago that Jeanvier was preferred to Ethan until that sending off ?

Kristoffer Ajer

If he can stay fit he could be a terrific utility player to have in the squad being able to cover CB, RB, RWB and defensive midfield. Not sure about his distribution ability but he has pace, can tackle and quick feet for someone so tall - think Matic or YayaToure (oh OK maybe Philip Billing)

Kristoffer Ajer

I'm sure we would just buy a defensive midfield player for that eventuality. ✅
Pep bought one of the best English CDMs for £50m while having the budget to buy pretty much any world class CDM and still played Stones there so maybe not.

Once you go on your arse when tackling you need to win the ball, take out the forward or a combination of both. I much prefer a defender to stay on his feet, jockey a forward and then win the ball. Pinnock and Mee have this down to a tee.

Kristoffer Ajer

No clue. All I saw was the match squad and report (Scotland winning with 2 goals in the last few minutes, Hickey doing OK at RWB) but probably the only background information is going to be in Norwegian!

Kristoffer Ajer

I genuinely don't know know where he plays. He can't play in a two, he isn't a RB nor a RWB and I don't like him in a three because his heading ability isn't the best. He is brilliant at bringing the ball out from the back.

I can see us bringing in a new player that is decent both in the air and floor. E.g. Collins

He clearly has ability, but I think he will struggle to get in the side next season

He was excellent early on in the first season. Has that desire to put his body on the line and celebrated blocks and tackles like he’d scored. Great at bringing the ball out (which we’ve really missed). I think he’s fine in a 3 and with the likes of Mee and Pinnock alongside his heading isn’t such an issue. After all, it’s not League 2, most sides have a lot more threat than just lumping the ball in the box. Equally Flekken seems a big dominant keeper who can probably take charge more on crosses than Raya did.

Kristoffer Ajer

I think Thomas and Claus have got to sort out his playing position and stick with it. From his games, he’s too wayward positionally at CB\RCB and not defensive enough at RB. Hickey and Mbeumo are developing a good partnership and the last thing we need is for Ajer to be unpredictable behind them.
