Millwall Lionesses vs Brentford
St Paul’s Sports Ground, Fisher FC
FT 0-3 (HT 0-0)
Big week of 3 fixtures, and 3 wins. Today was understandably the most laboured of them all. A few tired bodies with lead in their boots today, made the game quite hard work at times. Millwall set up a tight defensive block that made it tough for Bees to break down. However, we stuck to our guns and with a lot of patience we wore the Millwall side down and claimed all 3 points.
It was one of those game that 3-0 somewhat flattered us, the final score line was rather harsh on Millwall. But in other ways, the score could have been more and from our chances and possession, maybe we should have secured the 3 points earlier in the game.
We spent much of the game looking for the perfect threaded pass. As Millwall were organised and good in defence, it was frustrating as time after time they cut those passes out. We looked better when we moved the ball wide, or Rhian Cleverly put in dangerous diagonal balls. Sometimes I think we just need to be more direct and not try to play too pretty.
Ashley Cheatley was on top-form today, and unlucky not to get a goal or two. Her ball control always impresses, and in the tight centre her ability to play past players was a sight to behold. She went down in the second half with an injury that didn’t look good. Notice she was being worked on by the physio for most of the rest of the game, only hope it’s nothing too serious.
Kiszkis scored a brace and her second in particular, Cheatley would have been proud of her ball control. The game was broken open though by Katie Gilligans goal. Nice work by Black down the wing and a cool finish from Katie really released the pressure and you could feel the relief from anyone.
Both Abbi Smith and Katie Gilligan impressed in the centre of the park & controlled much of the game. Millie Constantine looked sharp, particularly when she moved to the front line after Cheatley was removed. Cleverly though was the star of the show, and showed her control and ability to manage a game, while also getting forward more than her previous showings.
We leave the league now for a couple weeks, with the cups now taking precedent. We remain 3 points ahead of the league table, but it’ll be interesting to see where we are by the time we return to league action.
