Brentford have announced the signing of teenage Ecuador international Darwin Guagua from Independiente del Valle, subject to international clearance, with the m

The first real significant event of the new partnership, as far as players are concerned.

I’m guessing that we may see a few similar transfers like this, in due course, especially from Spanish-speaking countries in South America, where we look for first team talent, but allow them to settle into an environment that they may be partly familiar with, before they eventually move across to Jersey Road.

I hope it all works out for all parties involved.

[Bush Tuckerman]

Surely he’s going to be way too good for that league!

Maybe that's the ploy, use him to get them promoted? #AgentGuagua

I am tempted to start doing doubles with Brentford and Merida like i did with FCM.
Merida are obviously a good enough team before "we" got involved.
A couple of decent additions and they could push for the play offs again.

[TW3Bee]

Not sure whether it has been mentioned but my Ecuadorian expert tells me that it is pronounced wuawua.

Yep. Means "baby" in Ecuador and onomatopoeic (so my Ecuadorian cleaning lady tells me).

My Ecuadorian butler agrees

[WARFIELD BEE]

Shame we wont see him for a year.

Means autobus in Canarian Spanish, so he's at the right stop

Spanish weekend break?

[Pixelator]

I assumed that Guagua ("wa-wa") was a nickname, as it seems a strange surname.
But Wikipedia says it's his first (paternal) surname: Darwin Johan Guagua Silva.

[AB]

A lot of lower league Spanish club fans seem to be quite angry about this on Twitter. Merida fans think he’ll get them promoted.

It's a low bar standards wise that level. I can only assume we've parked him there for immigration purposes

Possibly though I think his age makes a visa more achievable and third div Spanish football doesn’t give any points.

And in Cuban Spanish it also means bus!

[Babbelfish]

Darwin is a popular first name for boys in Ecuador, presumably because of the Galápagos connection. Darwin Baby/ Darwin Bus. I like it.

based on this and the comments in the replies, he’s either been injured or just away from the group

According to elperiodicoextremadura.com he was waiting for "administrative formalities" to be completed, and joined the squad for training on Monday.
He should be available for the next game, away to León next Sunday.

Catering is good at Leon

Catering is good at Leon

Best Moules Frites in Brussels (at least us4d to be 40 years ago when I lived there). Not sure whether that's healthy footballer's fare though.

Leonsea? Always wondered how that was spelled. Expect it will be pie and mash down there, or maybe jellied eels.

La Cultural Leonesa, yer great Yorkshire puddin'.
Not to be confused with Onionistas Salamanca.

Darwin starts on the bench today. He's got shirt number 17.

It's live on DAZN in Spain, so I'll keep you updated , siesta notwithstanding .
Extended Guagua and Brentford discussion after 16 minutes, though they seemed more interested Independiente del Valle as they had a Spanish manager for several years.

[Pixelator]

Darwin finally comes on in the 87th minute, with Mérida 1-0 down and a player down.

[Pixelator]

Immediately the best player on the pitch!

[Pixelator]

10 minutes of a game where your team can't hold onto the ball isn't much, but:
- Darwin moved straight into attacking midfield but covered the whole of the left side of the pitch.
- He covered well defensively but didn't get a chance to stick his foot in.
- He got into good positions ahead of the ball twice but his teammates couldn't find him.
- He got possession of the ball just once, beating the first player with a mesmerising twisty-turny move, then managed to pass back to a teammate when hemmed in by 2 players and the goal-line.

It was only a flash but he looked way too good for this (rather poor) level, so much so that it could be a lost year in terms of technical development.

[TOXIC BEE]

Making his first start tonight. Merida currently 2-0 up after 30 minutes, Guagua with an assist for the second goal.

2-2

[Pixelator]

as.com described one of his touches as a "venomous right-foot strike which a defender managed to deflect away with his head".
They also say that Mérida have 6 "important" absences through injury and suspension, so maybe the standard will improve.

[Pixelator]

Darwin was subbed off after 69 minutes.
Mérida have since taken a 3-2 lead.

[TW3Bee]

On the bench today, Merida have taken the lead at the start of the second half.

[Pixelator]

Mérida were being booed by their own fans in the first half, they've lost the last 4, and Darwin still gets hardly any game time.
I think we have a problem.

It's 2-0 now so at least they might move out of the relegation zone.

[Jim Rourke]

So like at TW8, they need to trust Matthew?

[Pixelator]

Darwin came on in the 70th minute today, as Mérida finally get back to winning ways.
2'25 in the video, Darwin's dummy sets up the second goal.

[Beelated]

No knee-slide celebrations on that pitch which is not in great condition probably due to the drought conditions, I suspect.

A good win for Merida, though.

P7 W3 D0 L4, so far.

[GuyBee]

Nice ground ( I know they were away) Bit like a modernised GP would have been. But the crowd, think of our current League One crowds

[Jim Rourke]

Interesting video in general. Tier three of Spanish football? And VAR is being used? Twice in the video the Referee goes to the monitor. Both times appears to stay with his on field decision.

I think it's similar to cricket - each team gets a certain number of appeals? If you watch it on TV you can see what looks like a "VAR remaining" counter.

[Jim Rourke]

Ah, interesting. Sounds like a reasonable idea.

On Saturday McGinn would have used Villa's up in the first five minutes

Yeah, they get two appeals each for the whole game, which they lose if the match ref sticks to their original decision. They can only be used only for goal / no goal , penalty or not, straight red cards and mistaken identity.
Technically, it's called FVS - football video support, because there isn't a video referee, just some bod to line up the video I guess.
And the coach doesn't chuck a red handkerchief on the ground. Instead they raise a blue card. And they have to do it quickly, before the game restarts.
