Brentford booked their place in Monday’s draw for the First Round of the Women’s FA Cup for the Fourth ear Running with an unspiring display against a much improved Worthing side.
When the two sides met in the league at the start of the season, Brentford cruised to 0 -5 victory at the Sussex Community Transport stadium but Worthing who are undefeated since that match, having won three and drawn one, matched the Bees for effort, ideas and determination.
Brentford were certainly missing Wiktoria Kiszkis upfront and the duel threat of her lethal partnership with Ashely Cheatley and neither side created much in the first half as their defences nullified the threats.
The Bees did have a couple of chances, Ashley Cheatley fired in to the side netting, Makeba Black tested the keeper with a low grass cutter that Sian Woods did well to get down to.
The Bees took the lead from the penalty spot in the opening minutes of the second half when Ilana Walters-Harris was felled in the box and Maddie Phillips made no mistake with her kick.
Worthing responded almost immediately when Nicole Mackay punished a sloppy back pass to fire the hosts level.
Substitutes are often called game changers, and Brentford looked better after the introduction of Mai Louvrier and Freya Worsley
Kattie Gillians saw her chip land on the top of the net after it dipped over the bar, which Abbi Smith went on to rattle with a shot form 16 yards.
With the fans in the ground considering the strong possibility of a penalty shoot at 90 minutes, a sublime through ball from Mail Louvrier, straight down the middle into the path of an advancing Ashley Cheatley lead to the Bees winning goal and the Bees fans in the ground sensed the Bees were about to take the lead the moment the ball left Mai’s foot.
The Bees travel to Dorking Wanders next week, who they beat a fortnight a go 0 – 4 in the cup to face to Worthing. Like the Dockers, Dorking are a much improved side having not lost since their heavy home defeat to the Bees and the Bees could be shocked if they deliver another uninspiring performance.
