its key to keep some of our Championship players for as long as possible.

They live and breath the club and experiences.
Keith has referenced this quite a few times, about those players (and Kevin O’Connor) who are educating and encouraging newer players – and probably putting them right where necessary – about the culture and history that defines how BFC operates. He’s included Ajer also in this group, explicitly, too. Henderson is a newbie but seems to have that work-ethic that Keith wants in the younger players and values him as a role model.

It’s not always about minutes on the pitch exclusively; it’s about maintaining and enhancing a culture that enables a 1+1 = 3 sum.

Exactly.

Because over time the worry is trying to keep that culture and knowledge of where we came from.

Saw it in Swansea, they had a great set up at one point but you saw that culture and recruitment eroded away and they dropped away with it.

I think him and Rico will be offered new contracts reflective of their age and triggering the extensions just gives all parties time to negotiate. It's a good thing isn't it?

Surprised that people see it as a negative and a sign that both are off.
Guess time will tell, but we’ve had a number of players announce new deals during the season and it is telling that Schade, Jensen and Rico haven’t signed new contracts, either cos one wasn’t offered or because a deal couldn’t be done.

Personally I can’t see why the club would wait until the summer to start negotiating with Jensen and Rico, mainly because if a deal can’t be reached it doesn’t give the club much wiggle room regarding a potential transfer before they can leave on a free.

As such I find it hard to believe deals haven’t been offered some time ago, hopefully they are about to be signed/announced and it’s just been admin holding it up. However I am more convinced that terms haven’t been agreed (or offered) and that Jensen is going to leave, which is a shame.

In Rico situation i expect they wanted to wait to make sure he recovered from his injury and in Schade's the word is that he was offered and didn't sign.

Jensen may have been that he wanted to see how the club was going to be after TF left but as you say time will tell.

The extensions give the club a year in Rico and Jensen's case which is a decent amount of time to renew of look for a fee.

Mathias Jensen

Personally I always get the impression Jensen thinks he’s good enough to be starting every game but personally I don’t think he is (at the level we’re at now aiming to push up the top half of the PL) and we need someone of Damsgaard’s level (when fit) plus the defensive/box2box players behind.

That’s not to say I don’t think he’s useful and imo he’s a good understudy for Damsgaard.

I just think there’s a good chance he might not want to not be the understudy, and knows that he is, when everyone’s fit.

So on the one hand I’d be surprised if he left - on the other I can imagine he might want to go be “the main man” somewhere. As I don’t think he’ll ever be that here.

I see Damsgaard and Jensen as different players, with different and complementary skill sets in potentially different areas of the field.

Fair enough.
Personally I don't.
Whilst Jensen HAS been played deeper, with varying degrees of success, and often to fill in (not his fault), I think he would prefer to be in the attacking midfield role, and that's where he's best.

Mathias Jensen

Think I largely agree with you with Rico and sadly (for him) the risk of him angling for a move is quite a bit lower than for Jensen, as is the likely fee, so the bees have time.

Think for Jensen I disagree, there is very little time to sort out a plan b, if you only start discussions now as if you try and sell him in the January window there will be a limited market, particularly as at that point non-uk teams can offer him pre contract terms with no fee at that point. Also Keith will want a settled squad through August so having Jensen leave at the end of the window won’t be ideal, unless it’s been pre-agreed.

Unlike your point re Rico, there was no really obvious reason to wait, so I imagine a decision had been made and the links with transfer offers from other clubs suggests he’ll be away and the extension was solely to protect value.

I’m always intrigued by fans lumping them together as they’re different types of player with complementary attributes – maybe it’s because they’re both Danish?

Not sure how you’ve ended up deciding a guy who was arguably our best midfielder last season is now not good enough to start next season and likely to be an understudy?

I do think we need an upgrade in midfield but ultimately in a midfield 3 we need 5 potential premier league starters and a couple who are working towards that level, given the number of games and intensity of the league. Jensen would be one of those 5 next season so to sell him for say £8-10m feels like it’s not the best business.

Arguably is doing a lot of heavy lifting in that first line

Obviously I'm not going to agree he was our best midfielder (not sure if you mean this season just gone or the one before that when you say "last").

As an attacking/creative midfielder he got a massive:
- 3 goals and 1 assist this year
- 0 goals and 2 assists last year

Damsgaard by contrast got:
- 4 goals 4 assists this year
- 2 goals 11 assists last year

So in the same two years Damsgaard has double the number of goals and 5 times the number of assists.

If the claim is then "but he does loads more defensive work or spends most of his time there" then again I'd much rather have Janelt/Henderson/Yarmo (maybe soon Milambo/Konak) for those qualities.

Fundamentally I think we're a weaker side when he's playing one of the defensive roles and not as the most attacking of the three midfielders.

If you’re going to trade statistics, then Jensen’s 2,252 minutes last season requires some explanation.

It's a really simple one....he was covering for Damsgaard until we got injuries to Janelt and Hendo and then played most of the rest of the season covering them. Hope that helps.

The only thing that Jensen was covering for Damsgaard was Damsgaard's poor form last season.
He was in the team on merit.

That's just not true.
We were playing Damsgaard, Janelt and Henderson.
He wasn't the first choice in the early part of the season.
As usual Dams body starts to break down, plus later on in the season, Janelt and Henderson get injuries, so he ends up playing loads.

Dams was in poor form, caught with the ball often, pushed off the ball too easily, couldn't handle being doubled up on and his passing was very hit and miss.Of course the were times when he did well but not consistently.

Jensen staked a claim for a spot when he was subbed on in those early games and became he became the preferred choice to start.

Mathias Jensen

What we can agree on is we need a collection of players in each area that can come straight in and perform. He's certainly one of those.
Yeah. I'd keep him. Unless the wage demands are unreasonably high. As he's our second best in the attacking/creative role (behind Damsgaard).

As mentioned earlier, I suspect it's ultimately going to be down to two things; whether he's happy being a squad player / cover, or feels it's time to be the "main man" somewhere, and wages obviously.

If he wants to go (for a reasonable fee) I suspect we'll let him. If he wants to stay and the wage demands aren't crazy then I think we keep him.

Really down to him.

Again. Not true.

Damsgaard was man of the match on here against Villa, Fulham, Burnley, 2nd against Liverpool, and decent in others.

Your description sums up Jensen really well though ;)

Mathias Jensen

Just a reminder that this was @LongLostBee view of Jensen at the start of the season (from the Milambo thread)
It's called hyperbole darling.
As Milambo was great in that match (as all the other comments show), showing exactly the kind of thing we lack when playing Jensen as one of the defensive/box2box players, and no doubt why we bought him.

And yours confirms you should have gone to specsavers 🕶️;)

Mathias Jensen

Our most versatile midfielder with the most club experience would be a great loss, unless we have a PL ready replacement to slot in.....which we won't.
I think a lot of fans forget that no two midfielders have identical attributes so are not readily interchangeable. With 5 ‘midfield’ positions to fill in a 4-2-3-1, the selection has to include a variety of individual attributes that together Keith believes will deliver the required breadth and blend for his specific game-plan. For attacking, maybe it will tend towards speed, so needs quick players plus quick deliverers, maybe it will tend towards carrying the ball forward, although most of our 'dribbling with the ball’ players have been out injured for some time, which has restricted our style of play, etc.

You're allowing yourself to forget that MD was well out of form at one point. You must remember us all questioning KA.

MJ played himself into the side and became crucial to our squad last season.

Don't let your dislike for him cloud what was a good season for him.

Hes even played himself back into the Denmark side.

I don't fault his effort or his passing/creative ability, and don't dislike HIM....I just don't rate him as a deep-lying midfielder as I don't think he provides enough of a shield to the defence.
Damsgaard being out of form means MJ is/was a good replacement....and that's exactly what I'd want him to be....rather than a Vitaly or Hendo replacement.
As I say, if he wants to stay, and wage demands aren't huge, then I'd keep him for exactly that....but I'd be wanting Janelt/Hendo/Yarmo/Milambo/Konak fighting for the positions behind one of them, rather than him filling one of those spots!

Good points.

I think he can play the deep lying role against the right team.

Also depends who he has alongside him.

You wouldn’t want him in the CDM role but playing alongside a CDM he’s fine… the problem we’ve had since Nørgaard moved on is that we’ve always had a fill-in, never a replacement, so we’ve ended up having to play 2 holding, one to cover the other. Put one player there with all the right attributes and the second deep-lying midfielder is free to roam into space.

You don't rate Jensen then I take it... Good job KA is a better judge than you

Mathias Jensen

I think I've explained what I rate him at and and what I don't. For all you know, KA judges him exactly the same way I do, but I'm sure it makes you feel smart saying that.
I don't feel smart at all I just bh believe we are a better team with both Jensen and Damsgaard in it

Seems to be a really quiet summer for Jensen on this thread? No posts for > 6 weeks.

I assume we offered him a contract that he turned down?

Unless Sangarre is oven ready, I suspect we'll see Matti start v Spurs

Jensen signed a one year extention along with Rico several weeks ago

How did Matthi get on yesterday? KA must decide which blend of midfielders suits us best. I'd kinda want Matthi in the team tbh.

He’s a fabulous player and deserves to play ..
oh and did well yesterday ..

I thought his work rate and pressing was off the charts yesterday. Clearly a different player further forward. Can’t believe we had him in a deep lying position for 4yrs!!

Mathias Jensen

That’s how you justify your place in the XI. Never has “aged like a fine wine” been more apt. Not just in terms of quality, but fitness too. Spearheaded our press from the off with such aggression and intensity, calm and calculated on the ball. Excellent.
