Brentford Women ended their pre-season this afternoon with a narrow 1-0 defeat at the hands of higher-tier opposition, Chatham Town. A game that, for many supporters on both sides, was a lot closer than the difference in levels suggested on paper.
Chatham made the brighter start and created several early openings, but Brentford weren't without their own attacking threat. Wiktoria Kiszkis tested the Chats defence with an effort from just outside the box, while the Bees also forced a couple of corners during a spell of pressure.
The hosts came close to taking the lead midway through the half, dragging an effort wide from close range before the Bees keeper, Mya Francis-Pownall, produced a superb one-handed save from a downward header moments later.
Following the hydration break, Chatham were gifted another opportunity after a Bees defender was caught in possession in a dangerous area. The resulting shot was deflected for a corner, from which the hosts struck the underside of the crossbar. Chatham claimed the ball had crossed the line, but the flag was raised for offside.
The deadlock was eventually broken moments before half-time by Chatham's No. 3. Jasmine Auguste. A high ball was played into a dangerous area of the six-yard box and, despite the Bees keeper seemingly getting a glove to the ball, Jasmine’s looping header found the back of the net to give Chatham Town a 1-0 lead at the break.
The second half was a much more even affair, with Brentford seeing plenty of possession and looking to find a way back into the game.
Chelsie Berry had a couple of opportunities, including an effort shortly after the restart which was comfortably saved, before she dragged another effort wide from a corner in the 60th minute.
For the remainder of the match, the Bees continued to have plenty of the ball but struggled to seriously trouble the Chats keeper and her defence. Chatham also had spells of pressure and got forward on occasion, but neither side was able to add to the scoreline.
In the end, Chatham held on for a narrow 1-0 victory, bringing Brentford Women's pre-season to a close. Despite the defeat, it was a competitive outing against higher-tier opposition and a valuable final test ahead of the new campaign
