Awful lot of moaning on here by people who wanted to make a load of changes from our best 11. You got what you wanted so no good complaining now.
I thought we didn’t make a lot of changes?

Sunderland 3 - 2 (Wilson, Thiago) Brentford - EFL Cup R4

Do you think otherwise, or do you just not take kindly to criticisms of players that didn't get here in the summer?
I told you, I'm bored with hearing you in this thread, I'm hardly likely to extend a conversation am I?

Really not impressed with tonight and of course it will be labelled as bed wetting by the rose tinted brigade, but I think we’ve lost sight of the basics of attacking and defending in our quest for being horrible to play against.

We make foul after foul after foul which kills our own momentum. Some of the fouls tonight make me question the football intelligence of some of our players.

We aren’t winning the duals when it matters.

And then when we do get the ball it’s backwards and sideways stuff on the halfway line with little penetration, often leading to a lack of patience and a hoof.

A little less chaos ball and a bit more use your brain ball would be nice.

Sunderland 3 - 2 (Wilson, Thiago) Brentford - EFL Cup R4

Utter nonsense. Bored with hearing you in this thread now.
I also think Wilson has looked more dangerous than Thiago in the matches I've watched him play. However, it's only in the cup matches.

Thiago overall play still very good. Not tonight however.

same old people ignoring what they are seeing

I know what I am seeing, a Mickey Mouse cup game nobody really cares about

I could list right here and now the 5-6 people who will be slagging off our players the next time we lose. Calling our latest signing a useless waste of money, just the same old bores.

Keith has lost me I’m afraid.
This season has been 80% poor.

And I get that people will post laughing emojis and the usual people will say I’m bed wetting or whatever, but this squad should be playing better than is.

I’ve just switched over to the Chelsea/ Liverpool game and the pace and energy is light years better.
At 3-1 down with minutes to go we’re playing triangles near the halfway line. It’s laughable.
We currently have the best squad we’ve ever had, and yes we are badly underperforming. And we’ve had a relatively nice run of games from the start should have picked up more points.

Saturday is massive if a Forest side comes to the GTech on Saturday and beats us, the pressure on Keith is on.

Sunderland 3 - 2 (Wilson, Thiago) Brentford - EFL Cup R4

Individual mistakes have cost us in the last 3 games. Yarmoliuk red card vs Liverpool, Kelleher x Hickey vs Hull and Malick Diouf & Valdimarsson this evening.

Yes, it’s not been beautiful free flowing football but we’ve been the better team in 2 of the 3 games. Can’t pin the brain farts on the Head Coach and overall we’ve been competitive in every game and incredibly difficult to beat.

Would love to be in the next round, but silver lining is no League Cup Quarter Final between Fulham (A) and Newcastle (H), who are both out, ahead of the busy Christmas and New Year period.

It’s not, he’s got 5 years on his contract and we don’t make snap decisions. But we look a bit lost at the moment and the management has to take some blame with that.

Sunderland 3 - 2 (Wilson, Thiago) Brentford - EFL Cup R4

What's happening with our discipline lately? I feel like we're racking up way more fouls and yellow (and red) cards than we ever have before than previous seasons. Can call some of them bad decisions but that's only some of it..

Poor today; poor for some of the Hull game and poor first half against Liverpool. I'd say the manager has a dog in this fight.

We played a much stronger team than they did.

Sunderland 3 - 2 (Wilson, Thiago) Brentford - EFL Cup R4

No blame on the manager at all, three terrible defensive mistakes cost us the game. What does he do about that?
Harsh to say but I would've taken off Valdimarsson and Diouf at half time.

Those subs in the second half as far as I can tell seemed pre-planned regardless of the scoreline and lacked ambition and an intent to actually get something from the match.

KA picks the lineup, the subs and the tactics to dictate the game and you're asking what he's meant to do? One of the most bizarre takes I've seen all night.

Sunderland 3 - 2 (Wilson, Thiago) Brentford - EFL Cup R4

I read somewhere that Valdimarsson wants away to get more first team opportunities. I think he showed tonight that's unlikely to happen

Sunderland 3 - 2 (Wilson, Thiago) Brentford - EFL Cup R4

Some games were designed to irritate the sh*t out of you.

Hit the post twice, off the line, over the bar, two great save by the keeper, then 5 mins of utter horse sh*t defending and you are 3.0 down.

Second half, so slow, so many sideways passes as you watch the time drift away.

Every long ball not contested by the forwards as Thiago backs in hoping the defender won’t jump for it, but guess what, they always have done and always will, they aren’t going to step back and let you have it for free.

Every time you touch their players a free kick is given and another 2 minutes tick by, so many soft free kicks.

You get one back and it takes 2 mins to start the game and the ref adds nothing on.

Just to rub salt in, I feel like I am watching it on Sunderland TV, so we ever get a pro Brentford pundit.

The only positive is Thiago getting one, should get him up and running now.

Put it in the bin and move on.
...of course we bin it mate....we always bin the EFL Cup....no point in getting angry... personally I choose apathy.

Spot on👏

Let’s not get complacent. We still need to compete from the start of the game, not like we did against Hull on Saturday.
wasn’t even trying to be complacent but probably only know about 4 of those names- but guess that one bit me in the arse

Sunderland 3 - 2 (Wilson, Thiago) Brentford - EFL Cup R4

He should. Been outperforming Igor whenever he's played since he came in, but has yet to be rewarded for it
There’s no way Willson is a starter in any scenario unless we completely change our style and system of play. And bluntly, his all round game is miles off it IMO.

Sunderland 3 - 2 (Wilson, Thiago) Brentford - EFL Cup R4

We're currently 5th in the Premier League. I do agree that Performances have been below standard recently however.
League table means nothing til April. 7 wins all competitions since Arsenal, of which including Macclesfield, Burnley (where we really shouldn't have won), Brum and Reading.

No. It definitely means we're currently 6th in the table. We need better performances moving forwards and that's for all to see.

* Thought we were 5th.

Sunderland 3 - 2 (Wilson, Thiago) Brentford - EFL Cup R4

Not totally surprised by the result. Got to focus on Saturday now and get back to winning ways.

Good to see Thiago get on the scoresheet, hopefully that reignites him.

Sounds like we had the West Ham version of Diouf tonight, hope he doesn’t end up being what all the Hammers fans said he would be when we signed him.

Onwards and upwards 🐝

Sunderland 3 - 2 (Wilson, Thiago) Brentford - EFL Cup R4

Last few games have been so open, we're conceding far too many chances, Could argue three out of five full backs are better going forward than defending.Attacks when not a fast break ponderous and prone to breaking down with loose passes or control.Do we have coaches assigned to specialist roles apart from the set piece coach. Rambling , disconneted, lack luster post just like tonights performance.

Sunderland 3 - 2 (Wilson, Thiago) Brentford - EFL Cup R4

Hakon and Malick were dreadful for the goals.

Too many players making bad decisions, out of form or struggling for confidence.

If we can turn it around we will be in great shape ✅

I never mentioned sacking him. Just pressure. If you think he won’t be under pressure with recent results, I’m sure the club assembled this squad this season with the hope of top 7 and European qualification. The whole coaching team needs to get more out of what is a very good squad.

Sunderland 3 - 2 (Wilson, Thiago) Brentford - EFL Cup R4

Seemed like Keith cared with his team selection though. If anyone didn’t care that would be Le Bris…
I think Le Bris picked 11 very able players, who were all drilled in the way of the whole squad, all very keen to stake a claim for a PL starting berth, and I think he danglrd this carrot very well in motivating them tonight.

Sunderland 3 - 2 (Wilson, Thiago) Brentford - EFL Cup R4

Sunderland basically had no interest in that competition, 11 changes and a cobbled together team that in the open 25 minutes was following the script and heading for a heavy defeat. We really could have been 3-0 up ourselves .
As we know only too well football often doesn’t follow the script and some horrendous errors and shambolic defending we find ourselves 3-0 down and like a rabbit caught in the headlights , ironically we almost get back in the game with Wilson scoring and then a brilliant and brave save denying him a second just before half time that could have changed things.
Half time did us no favours and despite controlling possession we looked woefully short of ideas and multiple subs didn’t really change things Sunderland reserves knew that if they kept their shape, defended well we’d eventually lose possession or over hit a cross.
It actually makes it all the more frustrating that Jensen comes up with a fantastic cross and Thiago a perfect header and you wonder why the hell they couldn’t have done that earlier?
At the end of the day 13 crazy , self destruct minutes cost us dear and we left ourselves too much to do when too many players had an off night .

We thrashed Spurs and Chelsea, would be unbeaten without Yarmo's stupidity and a disgrace of a referee.
We're currently 6th in the top league in world football on a budget amongst the lowest in that league.
Tonight was dire. I think we thought we'd walk it and couldn't pick up the pace having realised that we had a fight on our hands. Hate to say it but much like Arsenal last night.
Andrews should kick them up the arse. God help us if Kelleher gets injured because Valdimarsson simply isn't good enough.
We don't become crap overnight however bloody awful tonight's display was.

It’s not overnight though is it?

Tottenham were appalling.
Chelsea were almost as bad.

Leeds first half was our best performance of the season. Other than that we’ve been pedestrian and quite honestly boring.

I don’t expect people to agree.

There’s no way Willson is a starter in any scenario unless we completely change our style and system of play. And bluntly, his all round game is miles off it IMO.
I would've thought the same at the start of the season, and overall I do think Thiago is a better footballer. But he's not showing it at the moment, and I disagree with Keith that the solution is to play him for 90 minutes each week, especially when we finally have a good backup for him who, in my view (and clearly this is a contested issue), has been showing a lot more fight and lethality than Igor this since he was brought in.
Isn't that why we needed Wilson? To be able to rest Igor when things weren't clicking for him, whatever the reason? Isn't that what the explanation was for his regression at the end of last season, that we had no other option and he had to play week in week out to his detriment?

Part of it is that we keep more players forward than under Frank which means we need to make more cynical fouls. But even given so we seem to be committing a few too many needless fouls atm.

Sunderland 3 - 2 (Wilson, Thiago) Brentford - EFL Cup R4

This is going to be one of those events that happens every season isn't it?

Manager says we're taking the cup seriously, yet the performance we put in tells a very different story. We lose, and Sunderland get a promising fixture in the next round.

And like every season, we'll probably look back on this and say this was a wasted opportunity and wonder what could have been.
I disagree. The team we put out showed that we were taking it very seriously, so I don’t think K.A. can be criticised for that.

Sunderland 3 - 2 (Wilson, Thiago) Brentford - EFL Cup R4

League table means nothing til April. 7 wins all competitions since Arsenal, of which including Macclesfield, Burnley (where we really shouldn't have won), Brum and Reading.

So you would be perfectly ok if we lost the next 7 games and found ourselves bottom, because the table means nothing until April

Of course the table means something.
